Soldiers or Doctors to Afghanistan? Both, But Why Soldiers If...

My response to Professor Carter's comment came long, so i decided to post it in a separate blog post. Here is Prof. Carter's comment: Hi Elham: Professor George Carter here (Betty Tonsings husband) you may not remember me. I am retired now. Are you familiar with Robert Fisk's work/ articles on Afghanistan? He writes for the British newspaper, The Independent, most recently on 15 November 2008, "There is no end to the centuries of savagery in Afghanistan." While he is not well regarded in the… Continue

Interested in Afghan Politics? Second Post

Insurgents and the prospects for peace in Afghanistan This is to follow my response to Mr. Jackson Day's comment. For the past some months the Afghan government has been trying to launch a peace negotiation with insurgents as a new strategy to deal the growing insecurity in Afghanistan. Many international analysts believe that there is no military solution to the problem in Afghanistan, and have advised the Afghan government and the international forces to seek for a political solution.… Continue

Interested in Afghan Politics?

Karzai Ready to Protect Mullah Omar if Mullah Joins the Government for Peace In a press conference that was held on the 16th of November in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai expressed his willingness to protect the fugitive Taliban leader, Mullah Omar and some other top Taliban commanders if they are willing to join the Afghan government for the sake of peace[1]. Karzai’s statement signifies the weaknesses of his government and his failure to talk to the insurgents from the position of power… Continue

This discussion is for everyone who would like to respond! Technology indeed has flattened the world. Many of you have read Tom Friedman's book on this. People social network with each half a world...

Would one give up privacy for the good of the community? 25 Replies

Hi all, I am surprised to hear that there are many persons living with HIV and Aids in America. Statistics always portray Sub-saharan Africa as the only continent that finds AIDS difficult. Actuall...

In Lesotho, I read (never having been there), European concepts of health cause confusion. European concepts distinguish between life and health, body and soul, individual and community. In the Les...

Why Global Visits

Most people cannot get on a plane and travel outside their country to satisfy a curiosity about other people and cultures. And although our world is shrinking and indeed becoming once again 'flat' because of technology and non-stop media, we seem more fragile than ever before, further away from peace than any other time.

We are optimistic however that we also have the greatest opportunity now to gain greater understanding and knowledge about each other through technology. Most of the people behind Global Visits have been fortunate to spend years outside their home countries, working in other cultures and sharing many friendships. We know that once we get over our uncertainties and fears, as neighbors in our global community we have so much in common, including a desire for peace and friendship.

Get Involved

Would you like to talk with someone in a country greatly different from your own?

You can form a private group. Global Visits did this for years with Project Perception. You might be two student groups half a world apart and want to engage in a private discussion forum or project together, and you can. Your privacy will be respected. In the past, we have had projects linking American students up with students from Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Syria and Kenya.

Global Visits is not restricted to students: perhaps a group of teachers wants to start a group. Or, maybe you belong to a service organization like Rotary, or an association and want to talk with people who share your goals but live on a different continent.

You might want to start a public discussion, a blog, invite people to your member page and listen to your favorite music.

You can list an event and invite us to attend.

We only ask that you support the mission of Global Visits. We are not the usual social networking site. Our mission is to promote greater understanding between cultures through educational and cultural exchange,

A 'Wired' Mission

Go anywhere in the world, and we are 'wired' together by advancing technology. But we have yet to figure out how to 'wire' peace. Our mission is to use this technology to leap over vast cultural and geographical divides, linking students and teachers together, to talk with each other, laugh together, collaborate in a project, share pictures of our families, our favorite songs.....to be friends.

For several years, Global Visits was a pioneer using modern communications technology to linking people together from diverse cultures. We called our efforts 'non traditional' student exchanges.

Now, we join the world of 'social networking' with a serious purpose: peace and understanding.
